The Roman Sandwich from New Deal Fruit

Owned by the fourth-generation Petruzzelli family, New Deal Fruit is a pilgrimage destination for anyone interested in Italian deli sandwiches in New England. Located on Broadway in Revere, Massachusetts, about 10 minutes from Boston’s Logan airport, we find ourselves stopping by before and after flights—and often when there are no flights planned at all.

The location is also a market with fresh fruits and vegetables and a creative collection of Italian foods, pastas and canned goods. After entering this food emporium, make a sharp left and you will see the beauty of the deli. Meat hanging like artwork, stacks of bread and cheese, menu cards that look like they’re written by food angels. The most difficult part is choosing from the litany of choices. We’ve had the Italian Stallion, the Big Bambino, Joe DiMaggio and Marco Pollo, but our new favorite is The Roman.

This sandwich consists of an Italian roll, prosciutto, provolone, a chicken cutlet and roasted peppers, topped with oil and seasoning. It’s big enough to split, so you only need one or eat half and save the rest for dinner. There are no tables at New Deal, so you have to have a plan that either involves eating it in your car or driving to the beach nearby for a more serene option.

We believe in lunch, and this is the type of lunch we highly recommend.
